Chess in Nuremberg and Middle Franconia

Chess around Nuremberg is club chess first. Most clubs sit in Nürnberg, Fürth and Erlangen, yet nearly every market town from the Franconian Switzerland to Heideck has one, meeting on Friday evenings in a parish hall, an inn or a school. Around them: a few opens, a monthly city blitz, children’s courses, seniors’ rounds and school chess groups for their own pupils only.

Chess960 near Nuremberg

Over the board, Chess960 has one known home in the area: the Schachklub 1911 Herzogenaurach keeps a page for its Chess-960-Meisterschaft, a club championship it describes as played every January. The winners listed there end with 2019, and none of the pages read names a later edition, so no current Chess960 event can be given for Nuremberg, Fürth, Erlangen or the counties.

In Chess960 the back-rank pieces are shuffled into one of 960 starting positions before the game, so prepared opening lines are of little use from the first move. For a game between club nights, ch960.com offers Chess960 online.

How the lists are ordered

The directory holds 75 entries, 75 of them current or waiting for a newer dated trace. Clubs start from the schach.in register and the Bavarian league portal; the rest comes from the clubs’ own sites, the city’s culture and seniors’ programmes, municipal gazettes, school news pages and the FIDE tournament list, all opened between and .

Lists run from the most recently dated entry downwards; nothing is scored, ranked or bought. A detail that no page states is printed as “not stated by sources”, never filled in by guesswork. The source marks and the borders of the area are explained under how Nuremberg entries are checked.

A club, course or open missing?

Evenings move, rooms change hands and school years end, so an entry can fall behind without anyone noticing. A short note with a link to the page that shows the change is enough, and the same goes for a club, a seniors’ round or an open that is not here yet.
